Willies et al (2011) described this shaft as a probably both an extraction shaft, given its 2.5m diameter and a ventilation shaft. Interestingly, the 25 inch 1873-1888 Ordnance Survey maps of South west England show a "well" at this location rather than a shaft.
The shaft was noted as infilled with 20th century debris and is lost under the rear patio of Graham House on The Avenue.

Notes: The Oxford Archaeologists observed a 7.5m high stone pack close to the shaft base. They concluded this had been constructed to provide support for buildings above.
