Davies, T., Willies, L.M. and Redvers-Higgins, N. (2004), label Hadley Shaft on a map (figure 3, Early to mid-late 19th century quarry working near the Hadley Arms - leased areas) on page 346.

The map shows four shafts on a northeasterly alignment across Firs Field towards the Hadley Arms. This alignment corresponds with a new quarry roadway driven by John Burgess and his son in the early nineteenth century. This roadway was approximately 5 m high and 4 m wide and would have been used to deliver stone to the four shaft bottoms for lifting to the surface.

The location is approximate and the shaft is lost.

Alternative Names: Combe Down Quarries, Combe Down Quarry, Firs Quarry, Firs Mine, Three Acre Quarry

Notes: The Oxford Archaeology Unit were unable to access this shaft on the surface or underground. The continuation of the roadway from the previous shaft, Arched Shaft, was observed underground but this was found to be blocked off and backfilled. Willies, L.M., Redvers-Higgins, N. and Ianto Wain (2011) does state that there is documentary evidence of the shaft.
