This shaft is shown on a plan (figure 9.2) in 'Finished Labour of a Thousand Hands': The Archaeology of the Combe Down Stone Mines, Bath, Somerset published in 2011. It is reported that both the Byfield and the Firs Field underground quarries were exausted by 1860 but the shaft is shown on both the 25 inch Ordnance Survey maps of 1873-1888 (South West England) and of 1982-1914.

The shaft is now lost under the lawn of the 10th Bath Scout group's headquarters at Firs Field.

Alternative Names: Combe Down Quarries, Combe Down Quarry, Firs Quarry, Firs Mine, Firs Shaft 4059, Firs Materials Shaft.

Notes: It is possible that this shaft provided both light and ventilation to the underground workings but it is much more lilely that it was a major shaft used to wind Bath Stone to the surface, prior to 1860. The Combe Down Stabilisation Project modified this shaft and used it as their "Materials Shaft."
