This shaft is shown on a plan (figure 9.2) in 'Finished Labour of a Thousand Hands': The Archaeology of the Combe Down Stone Mines, Bath, Somerset published in 2011. The shaft is not shown on the 25 inch Ordnance Survey maps of 1873-1888 (South West England) or the 25 inch Ordnance Survey maps of 1892-1914.
The shaft is lost under the front garden of 1 Byfield Buildings.
Alternative Names: Byfield Mine, Firs Quarry, Firs Mine
Notes: The shaft was not accessed by the Oxford Archaeologistsunderground but they observed that the shaft was vertical and lined with large ashlar cut blocks of Bath Stone.
