This shaft was catalogued as Shaft 69 by the Willies et al (2011). The shaft is possibly one of the oldest in the Combe Down quarries. It entered directly in Quarry 519, a quarry dated to the first phase (Late 17th and early 18th century) of underground quarrying on Combe Down.
The shaft was recorded, by the Oxford Archaelogy project as being infilled with brown silty clay. They suggested that the site might either be a infilled former shaft or a later collapsed area, into which debris and other dumped material had been deposited.
The shaft is not shown on the 25 inch Ordnance Survey maps of 1873-1888 (South West England) or of 1892-1914, although a small walled enclosure in the correct location is present on both maps.
The shaft is lost in the rear garden of 8 Combe Road Close.
