Little is known of this shaft and indeed there is some possible confusion as to its existance! Willies et al (2011) recorded it during the the underground surveying but the shaft was disputed by a later archaeological team. They suggested an error or possible duplication of Shaft C1.

Willies et al (2011) described the shaft as small and circular and possibly used to import stone blocks to build walling on a major underground tramway.

It is not shown on the 25 inch Ordnance Survey maps of 1873-1888 (South West England) or on the 1892-1914 maps. The shaft would have been on the edge of the Firs Field but is now lost.

Alternative Names: Combe Down Quarries, Combe Down Quarry, Firs Quarry, Firs Mine, Three Acre Quarry

Notes: Combe Down Quarry is the collective name for a collection of quarries including Firs Quarry, Byfield Mine, Allotments Quarry and Coxe's Quarry which began as independent quarry workings but gradually merged into one giant network covering more than 10 hectares.
