Allottment Shaft or Shaft T2 was an approximately 1.8m diameter extraction shaft before it was capped by a cut stone vaulted roof. It was located at the end of an underground railway and showed evidence (Pollard (1994) & Willies et al (2011)), of two phases of haulage having both rope and later chain grooves cut into the bedrock of the shaft.
The shaft is not shown on the 25 inch Ordnance Survey maps of 1873-1888 (South West England) or on the 25 inch Ordnance Survey maps of 1892-1914.
Willies et al (2001) confirmed that the shaft was lost under the "new Houses" on Church Road. The GIS data from the Stabilisation Project locates this as the house at 3 Church Road.
Alternative Names: Byfield Mine, Firs Quarry, Firs Mine, Shaft 349
