Job Salter's Well

Combe Down, Bath.

The well was photographed by David Pollard, which shows the well intersecting with an underground roadway in part of Byfield Mine.

The location is approximate and it is possble that this is a duplication of either Byfield Shaft 201 or Shaft 919. The well is not shown on large scale Ordnance Survey maps of the nineteenth century but is described as under the yard of the present King William pub at the junction of Combe Road and Rock Hall Lane.

Alternative Names: Hine's Brewery Well

Notes: Irving (2005) suggests that the well was originally sunk for a house in about 1818 although other sources suggest that the well was dug in the yard of the pub built by Job Salter in 1824. It was later renamed as the Hine's Brewery Well, after Thomas Hine, who was a later landlord of the pub and also a partner in the Combe Down Brewery.
