This shaft was mapped as Shaft A3 by the Oxford Archaeology Unit. Evidence of holes cut for Lewis bolts near the shaft base, where there was substancial infilling, suggests a crane was situated here. This could indicate stone collection at the base of the shaft. They did also suggest that the shaft was possibly also for ventilation.
The shaft is not plotted on the 25 inch Ordnance Survey maps of 1873-1888 (South West England) or of 1892-1914.
The shaft is now believed lost under the pavement outide of 1 Westerleigh Road.
Alternative Names: Combe Down Quarries, Combe Down Quarry, Firs Quarry, Firs Mine
Notes: Combe Down Quarry is the collective name for a collection of quarries including Firs Quarry, Byfield Mine, Allotments Quarry and Coxe's Quarry which started life as separate workings but gradually merged into one giant network covering more than 10 hectares.
The Oxford Archaelogy project mapped the extent of the underground quarries and this shaft would have been located on the northern boundary of Quarry Area 2221. Quarry Area 2221 was leased to the Godwin/Godwyn family immedety prior to 1800.
