This shaft was not accessed directly by Willies et al (2011). They suggest it is possibily a ventilation shaft but probably more likely to be an extractopn shaft. It is located close to a major underground cartway and a saw bench.
The shaft is not shown on the 25 inch Ordnance Survey maps of 1873-1888 (South West England) or on the 1892-1914 editions
The shaft is lost under the driveway of 45 Westerleigh Gardens.
Alternative Names: Byfield Mine, Firs Quarry, Firs Mine, R3
Notes: Byfield Mine represents the western area of the Combe Down quarries. It was later connected to Firs Mine and collectively known as the Combe Down Mines.
