Although this site is shown as a shaft by Willies et al (2001), it is recorded as a well on the detailed archaeological sheets
It is not shown on the 25 inch Ordnance Survey maps of 1873-1888 (South West England) or of 1892-1914..
The shaft is lost under an unnamed road off Combe Road. It appears to be associated with a new tarmac patch in the road on a 2012 Google Street View image.
Alternative Names: Byfield Mine, Firs Quarry, Firs Mine
Notes: The detailed archaeological sheets record that the well originally served 1 Combe Road and other neighbouring propertie, after stone extraction from the quarries had ceased.
