This small ventilation shaft is shown on a plan (figure 9.2) in Finished Labour of a Thousand Hands: The Archaeology of the Combe Down Stone Mines, Bath, Somerset published in 2011. Hoever, it is not shown on the 25 inch Ordnance Survey maps of the Nineteenth Century.
The shaft is lost under the tarmac front yard of the King William pub. It is probable that either this shaft or Byfield Quarry Shaft S1 is a duplication of Job Salter's Well.
Alternative Names: Byfield Mine, Firs Quarry, Firs Mine
Notes: Wilies et al (2011) noted this shaft as 4m from the ceiling height to the base of its capping, with an infill from the surface of clay, soil and rubble. The capping was not visible on the surface.
