This shaft was recorded as Shaft J5 by Willies et al (2011) as a large barrel vaulted extraction shaft, 2m in diameter.
It is not shown on the 25 inch Ordnance Survey maps of 1873-1888 (South West England) or on the 1892-1914 maps.
The shaft is now lost under the house at 16 Oxford Place.
Alternative Names: Combe Down Quarries, Combe Down Quarry, Firs Quarry, Firs Mine
Notes: Combe Down Quarry is the collective name for a collection of quarries including Firs Quarry, Byfield Mine, Allotments Quarry and Coxe's Quarry which began as independent quarry workings but gradually merged into one giant network covering more than 10 hectares.
