It was recorded as Shaft J1 by Willies et al (2011) who described it as a large (2.5 m in diameter.) shaft for extracting stone to the surface.

It is not shown on the 25 inch Ordnance Survey maps of 1873-1888 (South West England) or on the 1892-1914 maps.

The shaft is now lost under the front garden to the east of 7 Oxford Place.

Notes: Combe Down Quarry is the collective name for a collection of quarries including Firs Quarry, Byfield Mine, Allotments Quarry, Coxe's Quarry etc., which began as independent quarry workings but gradually merged into one giant network covering more than 10 hectares.
