Little is known of this shaft. It was recorded as Shaft F1 Hawkins when the quarries were surveyed by Willies et al in 2011.

It is not shown on the 25 inch Ordnance Survey maps of 1873-1888 (South West England) or on the 1892-1914 maps.

The shaft is now lost under Combe Down Garage, just off of The Avenue.

Notes: Combe Down Quarry is the collective name for a collection of quarries including Firs Quarry, Byfield Mine, Allotments Quarry, Coxe's Quarry etc., which began as independent quarry workings but gradually merged into one giant network covering more than 10 hectares.
