Little is known of this shaft. It was recorded as Shaft C1 by the Willies et al (2011). It is not shown on the 25 inch Ordnance Survey maps of 1873-1888 (South West England) or 1892-1914.
Interestingly, Willies et al (2011) suggest that this shaft may have been used to import stone blocks down into the quarry below. The shaft is in close proximity to a major tramway that has substancu=ial stone block walling.
The shaft would have been on the edge of the Firs Field but is now lost.
Alternative Names: Combe Down Quarries, Combe Down Quarry, Firs Quarry, Firs Mine, Three Acre Quarry, C1
Notes: Combe Down Quarry is the collective name for a collection of quarries including Firs Quarry, Byfield Mine, Allotments Quarry and Coxe's Quarry which began as independent quarry workings but gradually merged into one giant network covering more than 10 hectares.
