The Oxford Archaeology Unit regarded this shaft as of significant interest. Willies et al (2011) recorded that the shaft was 4.27 m in diameter and was bisected at its base by a stone block wall built to provide a solid foundation for the building above.

Interestingly for such a large shaft, it is not shown on the 25 inch Ordnance Survey maps of the Nineteenth Century.

The shaft is now lost as it was filled with concrete during the stabilisation programme.

Alternative Names: Byfield Mine, Firs Quarry, Firs Mine

Notes: The shaft appears to have been under what is now the King William pub at the junction of Combe Road and Rock Hall Lane.

It is probable that either this shaft is a duplication of Job Salter's Well. Further investigation is required but the diameter of this shaft would suggest it is not a well.
