This shaft was recorded as Shaft A1 when Willies et al (2011) mapped the quarries. It is not shown as a shaft on either on the 25 inch Ordnance Survey maps of 1873-1888 (South West England) or of the 1892-1914 OS maps. However, a well is labelled at this location behind some buildings so it is possible the shaft is either misidentified or wrongly labelled.
North Road was comprehensively developed in the twentieth century and the original building and shaft/well are now lost. It's location would have been under the boundary hedge between 33 and 35 North Road.
Alternative Names: Combe Down Quarries, Combe Down Quarry, Firs Quarry, Firs Mine, 1116
Notes: Combe Down Quarry is the collective name for a collection of quarries including Firs Quarry, Byfield Mine, Allotments Quarry and Coxe's Quarry which started life as separate workings but gradually merged into one giant network covering more than 10 hectares.
