Work started at Tunnel Quarry in 1844. This was the original major quarry in the area. It had a broad gauge railway running into the underground workings. By 1864 it was producing one hundred thousand tons of stone annually. Taken over by the Navy in 1937. Tunnel Quarry had 42 entrances including 10 air shafts. Slope shafts 'A' and 'C' had personnel escalators. Slope shaft 'D' sunk by War Dept. Slope shaft 'B' was the original Spring Quarry shaft. Emergency exit via slope shaft 'E'
