In 1796, Mr. Morgan, a Clifton attorney, sank a '246-feet' deep shaft through St Vincent's Rock, in an attempt to intercept a branch of the spring feeding Hotwells. Known as the Upper Hotwell, a pump room with bathing facilities was constructed, and water was pumped to over three hundred houses in the area. Sadly, the venture soon failed and today no surface traces remain, although it is believed to lie close to the bar area of the former St Vincent's Rock Hotel (now retirement flats). Several other notable wells were sunk in this vicinity, mainly to supply drinking water to Clifton. Named wells included Richmond Spring, Buckingham Spring, and the Princess Victoria Street Spring, which was allegedly '300 feet' deep.
