Located almost directly opposite The Hotwell, this lively intertidal rising emerges from a stone archway situated at river level several metres vertically below the west bank. It only becomes visible at low tide. Inside it soon terminates at an impassable crack. Recorded as the 'Scarlet-welle' as long ago as 1470, the water was once renowned for its healing properties and in the Middle Ages a cold bath stood here, close to the ruins of a chapel and hermitage. It later powered several mills.
