Two trenches were sunk in Royal York Crescent in 1872 in search of iron. Thought to be on the site of the modern-day tennis courts, one trench was said to be 18m long, 12m wide and 4m deep, while the other reached a depth of over 15m. The mine only operated for a few years but did produce 3,800 tons of ore in 1872, and another 6,550 tons in 1874-75.
