Spring Quarry Shaft - Goods Lift GL5

RAF Rudloe Manor, Corsham.

This shaft is labelled as Goods Lift Shaft 5 on the 1942 plan of Spring Quarry in Secret Underground Cities by Nick McCamley (1998). The shaft appears to be capped on Google Earth images and McCamley states that it was capped in 1944. It has been labelled as TPS 21 by the MOD on the shaft head concrete.

Notes: Spring Quarry is divided into three major areas separated by geological faults. It was taken over by the Navy in 1937 and became known as West Lung. There are 42 entrances including 10 ventilation shafts. Slope shafts 'A' and 'C' had personnel escalators. Slope shaft 'D' sunk by War Dept. Slope shaft 'B' was the original Spring Quarry shaft. The emergency exit was via slope shaft 'E.'
