This is a capped air shaft in the north west corner of the Thorney Pits woodland. It is labelles TPS 4 by the MOD and as as Induction Air Shaft B4 on 1942 plan of Spring Quarry in Secret Underground Cities by Nick McCamley (1998)

Notes: Spring Quarry is divided into three major areas separated by geological faults. It was taken over by the Navy in 1937 and became known as West Lung. There are 42 entrances including 10 ventilation shafts. Slope shafts 'A' and 'C' had personnel escalators. Slope shaft 'D' sunk by War Dept. Slope shaft 'B' was the original Spring Quarry shaft. The emergency exit was via slope shaft 'E.'
