This ventilation shaft was dug during World War II by the Ministry of Works. It is labelled as Exhaust Air Shaft E4 on 1942 plan of Spring Quarry in Secret Underground Cities by Nick McCamley (1998) More recently it has been labelled as TPS 10 by the MOD.
It is underswtood that the shaft also served as an emergency evacuation / fire escape route.

Notes: Spring Quarry is divided into three major areas separated by geological faults. It was taken over by the Navy in 1937 and became known as West Lung. There are 42 entrances including 10 ventilation shafts. Slope shafts 'A' and 'C' had personnel escalators. Slope shaft 'D' sunk by War Dept. Slope shaft 'B' was the original Spring Quarry shaft. The emergency exit was via slope shaft 'E.'
