Probably beginning 'life' as a surface quarry, this main roadway entrance access into the underground quarry was roughly rectangular before being securely blocked some considerable time ago. A small gated entrance at the base of the impressive quarried face was left for bat and caver access.
Alternate Names: Backdoor
Notes: The Back Door entrance provides direct access into the Cathedral and the central region of the mines. It was padlocked without warning by the quarry company, Hansons in September 2014. This was soon removed but the owners of Tanglewood later stopped access by a fence and a CCTV camera. However, in July 2017 access was again lost when Hansons reinforced the grill and welded the gate closed. A route round the grill had been dug by August 2017 but this is again not accessible.
