Vincent's Swallet

Stoke Lane Valley, Stoke St.Michael.

NGR:ST 6662 4703
WGS84:51.22148, -2.47935
Length:8 m
Depth:8 m
Altitude:192 m

This is an 8m deep artificial shaft, sunk in 1922 to take effluent from a milk factory. Local folklore has it that the shaft intercepted a natural rift, which needed a 60-rung ladder to reach an underground streamway. MCG reopened the shaft in 1961-62 and reputedly found the rift blocked by a large boulder. Other cavers have dug it since.

Alternate Names: St. Vincent's Swallet

Hydrographic Resurgences: Stated chaff-test to St. Dunstan's Well unproven
