A series of WW1 tunnels, dugouts and trenches on Salisbury Plain that were used to train Australian and British troops to fight in and under the trenches of France and Belgium.
In 2017, archaeologists identified a unique First World War tunnel network in Larkhill, north of Stonehenge. prior to the construction of new Army housing. The majority of the site is now lost with the trenches and tunnels filled in and under housing but the plans were for approximately one third of the battlefield outside the housing development to become a memorial.
Alternative Names: None recorded.
Notes: Please note the location is very approximate.
The tunnels are of archaeological importance due to the graffiti left by the troops. There are more than a hundred inscriptions written in pencil or soot from candles by soldiers training on Salisbury Plain between 1915 and 1918. The inscriptions include the names of men who died, others who survived, decorated heroes and one deserter.
