Bagatelle Spa

Welton Lodge, Lyncombe Rise, Prior Park Road, Bath.

A small spring in the garden of the present day Welton Lodge was developed into a spa in the eighteenth century.

Alternate Names: Cupid's Garden Spa

Notes: Mr.Wicksteed discovered a mineral spring in his garden in about 1770 and subsequently developed it into a spa and pleasure ground called the Bagatelle or Cupid's Garden. It was a short-lived venture and was "forsaken and overrun with weeds"when Betsy Sheridan visited the area in 1786. The gardens were later developed and became the site of Welton Lodge, Bagatelle House and Ashleigh Villa.
