The cave consists of a small entrance chamber and a diminishing crawl. It has been depicted in old paintings and as such has been suggested as one of two possible sites for a cave painted by J.M.W. Turner and visited by Robert Southey in the late 18th century. However, the MCRA regards the adjacent St John's Hole, which was subsequently heavily modified by quarrying to be the more likely candidate. Probably the same cave was later (1805) used as a hideout for a gang of local thieves.
