In 1961 a rock ripping machine being driven by Roland Westaway sank into the top of a mineshaft near the edge of a 70ft high face at Backwell Quarry. Cavers found a 35ft deep shaft entering a cavern with "several" tunnels leading off.

Notes: NGR of quarry 49455 67750. A clay pipe was discovered with tobacco still in it. Bristol Museum dated this pipe to the C18.
