This is an 8m deep artificial shaft, sunk in 1922 to take effluent from a milk factory. Local folklore has it that the shaft intercepted a natural rift, which needed a 60-rung ladder to reach an underground streamway. MCG reopened the shaft in 1961-62 and reputedly found the rift blocked by a large boulder. Other cavers have dug it since.
